Chris Wadell

This year's keynote speaker is Chris Waddell, a Gold and Silver Medalist, and four-time Winter and Summer Olympic Paralympian.

Biography of Chris Waddell

Chris Waddell was a promising young skier at Middlebury College in 1988 when a skiing accident left him paralyzed from the waist down. Determined to get back on the slopes, he began skiing on a monoski roughly one year later. A little more than two years later, Waddell was named to the US Disabled Ski Team. Waddell went on to become the most decorated male skier in Paralympic history, winning twelve medals over four games, and spending a total of 11 years on the US Disabled Ski Team.

Chris recently made international headlines for his successful climb of Mount Kilimanjaro in September, a first for a paraplegic. Paralyzed from the waist down after a skiing accident in 1988, he took up adaptive skiing and won twelve medals at four Paralympic Games including a sweep of the gold medals in 1994 at Lillehammer. He also competed at three Summer Paralympic Games winning silver in Sydney in 2000 in the 200 meter wheelchair event. The Massachusetts native has been a charismatic promoter for adaptive skiing and was a prominent ambassador for the Salt Lake City Games in 2002.

In addition to his work with the Paralympics and the International Paralympic Committee, Waddell has found success as a motivational speaker. Waddell speaks to the resilience of the human condition, with topics ranging from leadership to adversity to quality of life.

Waddell has been featured in numerous publications, including Outside Magazine, Skiing, Ski, National Geographic Explorer, and People Magazine who named him one of “The 50 Most Beautiful People in the World.” He has also appeared on Dateline and Oprah.

2008

The OVBA is pleased to announce that Phil Maher, who many consider to be the greatest U.S. ski racer of all time, will be the guest speaker at the Snow dance Gala, the annual auction, dinner, and fund raiser for the Ogden Valley Business Association and the Snow basin Alpine race teams.  Maher won three consecutive Overall World Cup Championships, six total World Cup Championships, gold and silver Olympic medals, and gold and silver FIS World Championship medals.  He also had the most total wins in World Cup competition by a U.S. skier until Bode Miller passed him during the 2007/2008 season.

At the age of fifty-one, Mahre is attempting a comeback on the international ski racing circuit.  His early results have been impressive, and are chronicled in a feature article in the October 2008 issue of Ski Magazine.

The Snowdance is an elegant evening of entertainment and fine dining held at Earl’s Lodge at Snowbasin, and has come to signify the kick-off to the ski season.  Silent and live auctions, music from local favorites Shades of Gray, the always delicious fare from Snowbasin’s renowned kitchen, and award winning programs and speakers combine for what is always a memorable evening.
